Shelter-in-place orders are lifting in the Bay Area, but I’m bracing for a resurgence of COVID-19 cases. That means I’ll be sticking to my current grocery shopping and cooking routine.
In other words, you can expect to see more quick and easy recipes, like this slightly spicy tomato sauce, here on the blog. I think it’s a smart strategy, as they require minimal ingredients and effort.
Rest assured, I won’t be sacrificing flavor for convenience. For example, slightly spicy tomato sauce is delicious and versatile. You can:
- Toss it with pasta and finish the dish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese
- Spread it over pizza dough, layer on toppings and bake the pie until golden and crisp
- Use it as a bed for eggplant meatballs
There are plenty of reasons to add slightly spicy tomato sauce to your repertoire! Are you convinced?

- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ cup chopped black olives
- 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed and drained
- 2 Calabrian chiles in oil, removed from oil and chopped
- ½ teaspoon dried chili flakes
- ½ teaspoon sea salt, plus more, to taste
- 2 14.5 oz. cans fire roasted crushed tomatoes
- In a medium sauce pan, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Reduce heat to medium and add olives, capers, Calabrian chiles, chili flakes and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 minute.
- Add tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 25 minutes. Season with additional salt to taste.
